- hi; anyafper who knows & loves south lakeland may wish to know of,
and possibly [e-]write in objection to, an application for outline
planning permission for an industrial development on a greenfield site
in this beautiful countryside; and maybe to add to pressure for it to
be called in for a public enquiry:
- the application is for permission to build nine large buildings off
the side of the A590 north of crooklands, which is a fairly lightly-
used single carriageway (i.e. one lane in each direction), sharply-
cornered road north from the roundabout at the north end of the road
leading north-west up from skipton to the M6; that road carries a fair
amount of traffic heading further north onto the M6 (and off it, back
down to skipton, leeds & bradford, or to harrogate, knaresborough and
york), but the A590 road from crooklands up to kendal is lightly used,
and there is no effective public transport, so industrial development
in the area will generate a lot of traffic, and require significant
expensive road-building over and above the cost of a new junction,
alone estimated to be c. ukL 4-5 Million - payable by the taxpayer...
- the development is being presented as some sort of gateway project,
which sounds as though it's to be a fun place for tourists to visit -
but to the extent that it's possible to judge from the application's
details, this is not in fact the main - or even a significant - part.
- it is _possible_ that the businesses that may be attracted to it
would bring valuable jobs to south lakeland - but very few people
actually live nearby; most people employed would come from at least
as far afield as milnthorpe & kendal - from neither of which is there
public transport, and on the edges of which (to the south of miln-
thorpe, and to the north of kendal) there are already developments
with good transport links, which could be added to; and kendal has
also "brownfield" sites, awaiting redevelopment. to the best of my
knowledge, there are no plans to rebuild milnthorpe station on the
west coast mainline (closed in the sixties, in the marples-beeching
cuts, and since demolished): and this would in any case be some four
miles or so away from the site (approx.), & require a new bus route.
- the area for which the 83.5 acre proposed industrial development
outline planning application has been applied for is a designated
landscape of county importance: and further building is intended by
the developers, on the westmorland county show field nearby; this
does not strike me as a speculative industrial development that
*should* be granted outline planning permission without assessment
of the roads, communications, services, environmental and scenic
impact being made of _detailed_ proposals for this development on
a greenfield site; i think there should be opportunity for the
public to see what is actually intended should be built, and to
come to a judgment upon whether or not it is actually desirable.

there is a website being run by a group opposed to the application
for outline planning permission, with further details & arguments:
http://www.slogcumbria.info/
i have no connection with this, nor - yet - with the group.
- any objection or other letter regarding this sent to south lake-
land district council (or any other official department) needs the
reference, SL/2006/0321 (whether in objection, or in support of it).
- love, ppint.

desirous of cc-ing, or e-communicating directly with me. thanks.]

- hi; a brief follow-up to correct an error kindly pointed
out to me by martyn:
- the A590, from which road access to this industrial devel-
opment is intended to be taken, is *not* the single carriage-
way road running north from the skipton road-A6070-M6 access
road roundabout up to kendal, which the B6385 meets at crook-
lands: it is the "kendal link" road from the M6 roundabout -
and it is a dual carriageway, which significantly reduces my
concern as to the access road's being able to cope with the
increase in car traffic (though not as to the dearth of any
decent public transport links). [i was trying to work out why
the road north of the A6070 - skipton road roundabout was not
still the A6070, and completely missed that the skipton road
is not the A590, but the A65...]
- it's a road i've driven the length of numerous times over
the past three decades: <*blush*> i really _do_ know better.
- love, ppint.
[the address from which this was posted bounces e-mail;
please change the "f" to a "g" and drop the "v" if you
wish to cc. or e-mail me.]
